How to keep your Google Business Profile menu up to date

Why an accurate Google Business Profile menu matters — and a simple routine to keep yours matching what you actually serve.

Search for almost any restaurant on Google and you'll find their Google Business Profile: opening hours, address, photos, reviews — and, often, a menu. The problem is that for most restaurants, that menu is outdated. Prices from two years ago. Dishes that no longer exist. A summer specials section that never got removed. Guests see that information and make decisions based on it — and then arrive to find something different.

Why your Google Business Profile menu matters

Google is the first place most people check before visiting a restaurant they haven't been to before. The profile shows up on Maps, in search results, and in the local knowledge panel. A menu tab on that profile — showing your actual food and prices — gives potential guests confidence. An inaccurate menu does the opposite: it creates doubt and can lead to complaints or negative reviews from guests who expected one thing and got another.

Beyond guest experience, an up-to-date profile with complete information signals to Google that your listing is actively maintained. That positively affects your ranking in local search results.

What "menu on Google" actually means

Your Google Business Profile has a "Menu" tab, distinct from your website link. Google populates this either from data you provide manually through the Business Profile dashboard, or via third-party integrations. When properly set up, it shows categories, item names, descriptions, and prices directly on your profile — without guests needing to click away to your website.

Most restaurants set this up once and then forget about it. The result is that six months later, prices have changed, dishes have been removed, and the profile shows something that no longer matches reality.

The most reliable fix available today is to point your profile at a menu that is always current. In your Google Business Profile dashboard, set your menu link to your live Octopus Menu URL — the same page your table QR codes open. Change a price or pull a dish in Octopus Menu and anyone following that link from Google sees the update immediately, because there is no second copy to maintain.

Google's Menu tab itself is still edited by hand, so the routine below is the way to keep it accurate.

A 10-minute monthly routine for the Menu tab

  • Open your Business Profile dashboard and go to the Menu section
  • Compare it against your live menu — scan your own QR code and go category by category
  • Fix changed prices first (they cause the most complaints), then remove dead dishes, then add new ones
  • Put a recurring reminder in your calendar — the first Monday of the month works well

Google typically takes 24–48 hours to review and publish menu edits, so don't worry if a change doesn't appear immediately.

One more detail worth checking

Review how your category names read on Google. If you use very casual category names ("The good stuff", "Small bites"), they'll appear as-is on a public-facing platform — which may or may not suit your brand there. Consider using standard names (Starters, Mains, Sides) for clarity.
